Teachable Moment: 10/29/08

As a "learning organization", we have a desire to pass on bits of information that we learn along the way. Recently, we had the opportunity to learn a little bit about hydraulic trash pumps on a "working demo" with the City of Moline, IL

The City was trying to bypass a meter that was placed about 2-feet from the edge of a large pond. The backhoe operator dug a pit as far from the water's edge as he could, but still allow the crew to access the 2.0" copper pipe they were trying to reach. Since the pit was so close to the pond, there was a LOT of water pouring in through the (mostly) loose gravel wall of the pit, and the hole kept filling up with water. The crew had an OLD trash pump, but it wasn't able to keep up with the flow, and the little dewatering pump was putting up a valiant effort...it just wasn't enough.

Focus then switched to the old TP03. Why wasn't it performing like it should? Tim pulled the top plate off, and the answer was immediately apparent:

The amazing thing is that it pumped any water at all! There couldn't have been any more than 5-percent of the original impeller structure left! Additionally, if you look at the photo, you can see that the metal of the top plate had been eroded by use. That's what that little, circular-groove is in the metal plate of the old unit.

The last thing we learned was in regards to the little groove that's cut into the top-plate, to let air out.

Keep that groove clear!
This groove is there for a reason!

If that little groove becomes plugged for some reason, you could create a situation where you submerge the pump, but the air inside the pump can't escape, and it creates an "air lock" inside the bowl of the TP03. The air simply won't let any water get in, and the pump won't perform. Lesson: Keep that groove clear & unobstructed!
